Kemsing holiday 2

Part 1

Wednesday

We walked to a National Trust property called Knole House.

Seal Church, on the way. Unlike the church at Kemsing you can actually see this one over a wide area.
Same church again.

After an uneventful journey (which did involve climbing stone steps over a nice wall surrounding the estate, which is a deer park) we reached the house.

Knole House. It's kind of wide. (But it goes back a long way too. There are hundreds of rooms, only a small proportion of which are open to visitors.)

You weren't allowed to take photos inside (which I think is as disgraceful as it is expected) but it wasn't that interesting anyway - mostly very old chairs you weren't allowed to sit on, paintings you weren't allowed to doodle moustaches on, etc.

Some kind of bracket fixed to the outside wall of one courtyard.
Sculpture in another courtyard of some guy throwing a frisbee.
Bizarre landscape in the grounds.

On the way back we tried to take a different route and got severely lost several times.

Despite clear signs like this one!

Thursday

We took a look around the local church (St. Mary's) which was right next to the hostel (although you had to walk a slightly longer way to actually get there).

The chancel and its stained glass. (Image was made from two shots combined).
Neat chandelier - a genuine one with proper candles in.
Bell ropes.
Spiky tomb.
Entrance to crypt/boiler room.
Grave decorations. This picture is a bit blurred :(

In the afternoon we took the train to a nearby place that had a Roman villa.

Now that's what I call a vandalised phone box.

The villa (remains of...) was OK and had quite a nice mosaic; but after looking at that, we set off back on foot.

Rolled-up hay.

We stopped in to look at a rather flash church on the way...

Impressive path to the entrance.
Part of the porch.
Pews and shadows.
One gravestone was so badly weathered that it had acquired a keyhole.
Moss cross.
Large tank. (Hrm.)

The last past of our walk was along the North Downs Way again, but in the opposite direction from on Tuesday.

Kemsing from North Downs Way.
Red leaf found on descent.

Friday and Saturday...

Javascript recommended; browser information

This site requires Javascript and a current browser for the dynamic photo viewer to work. The browser you're using doesn't make the grade.

You can still use the site; when you click on a picture thumbnail, the picture will open in this same window. (Use the Back button to return.)

If you want the site to be at its best, please enable Javascript and use a supported current browser. This site does not use any browser-specific code but it relies on support for core Web standards set by the W3C: XHTML, CSS, and the Javascript DOM.

We recommend using Mozilla 1.0+ or Netscape 7.0+ (or another browser using the Gecko layout engine). The site also works on Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0+ (PC), which doesn't fully support the necessary standards but we did a workaround for it. It doesn't work on Opera because Opera doesn't support the DOM. Opera 7.0+ may resolve this in which case it'll work there too.

Site developed in valid XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.0. Fully accessible to users in text browsers or without CSS+JS.
